Water and dust resistance – all you need to know
Before you dive into the action with your waterproof or dust-resistant Sony device, you should check its capabilities and limits. Whether you want to take it swimming or on an adventure weekend, there are some basic guidelines to follow to ensure your device can handle whatever life has in store for it.
Let’s start with a closer look at IP ratings and how they may affect what you can and can’t do.
Resistance to solid objects and dust
IP0X. No special protection
IP1X. Protected against solid objects > 50 mm in diameter.
IP2X. Protected against solid objects > 12.5 mm in diameter.
IP3X. Protected against solid objects > 2.5 mm in diameter.
IP4X. Protected against solid objects > 1 mm in diameter.
IP5X. Protected against dust; limited ingress (no harmful deposit).
IP6X. Dust tight.
Resistance to water
IPX0. No special protection
IPX1. Protected against dripping water.
IPX2. Protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15 degrees from normal position.
IPX3. Protected against spraying water.
IPX4. Protected against splashing water.
IPX5. Protected against low-pressure water jet spray for at least 3 minutes.
IPX6. Protected against heavy jet spray for at least 3 minutes.
IPX7. Protected against the effects of immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.
IPX8. Protected against the effects of continued immersion in water at depths greater than 1 metre. The exact conditions are specified for each device by the manufacturer.

What this means for my device
So you want to capture exciting shots of your friends diving into the pool?
If your Sony device has an IP58 rating, as well as being resistant to dust (but not dust-tight), it is also waterproof to IPX8 standard. That means it’s protected against immersion for up to 30 minutes in fresh (non-saline) water at depths of around 1.5 metres. The exact depth and other details will be specified in your user guide.
Other ways to use your device:
When you’re not swimming, there are other ways to take advantage of your Sony device’s water and dust resistance. You can use it:
- When your fingers are wet.
- In some extreme weather conditions, like snow or rain.
- In dusty environments, such as a windy beach or when hiking along a dusty trail.
But don’t forget the covers…
As well as making sure you familiarise yourself with the IP rating of your device, you must remember to firmly close all covers before testing its water and dust resistance. This includes the covers for the micro USB port, the SIM card slot, the memory card slot and the headphone jack, if applicable. Some of our devices have a capless micro USB port. In cases where such a device has been exposed to water, it’s important that the USB port is completely dry before a USB cable is inserted into it. To remove moisture from the USB port, shake your device several times with the USB port facing downwards and then use a micro-fibre cloth to wipe your device dry. You should then check the USB port area again. If moisture is still visible in the USB port, repeat the shaking and drying procedure.
You should also make sure that no hairs or other small objects get caught between the covers and the seals when you close them. Not doing so may seriously damage your device.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your device:
- After using your smartphone, tablet or accessory in wet conditions, remember to dry off all covers and other areas where water can gather.
- After exposure to non-fresh water, such as chlorinated water from a swimming pool, always rinse your device off using fresh water.
- If either the speaker or microphone get wet, their function may be affected until all the water has completely dried.
- Drying times will vary depending on the environment, but the process may take up to three hours. During this time, you can still use all the features that do not rely on the speaker or microphone – you can take photos, check your email or send text messages without a worry.
- Do not use a hairdryer to dry any wet parts.
- Everyday wear and tear, along with damage to your device, can reduce its ability to resist dust and moisture.
Built for life
Even though your device may be resistant to dust and water, you should avoid unnecessary exposure to environments with excessive dust, sand and mud, or to moist environments with extremely high or low temperatures.
Therefore we wouldn’t recommend using your smartphone, tablet or accessory during a sandstorm or in a hot shower. Never immerse your device in salt water or let the micro USB port, headset jack or other uncovered parts come into contact with salt water. If you’re washing dishes by hand, avoid letting your device come into contact with the detergent or any other liquid chemicals.
We also recommend that you don’t listen to music or other audio underwater, as the presence of water can limit your ability to hear sound.
Take your device swimming
If your Sony smartphone or tablet is waterproof to IPX8 standard*, then you can use it in a chlorinated swimming pool. However, avoid keeping the device in the pool for too long and remember to rinse it off thoroughly with fresh water once you get out.
Over time, chlorinated water can corrode the rubber seals, so prolonged use in chlorinated water is not recommended. But if you want to use your device to get underwater close-ups of a spectacular dive or your child’s first swimming lesson, go ahead.
* Sony devices that are rated IPX7 or lower should not be exposed to chlorinated water.
Warranty, repairs and customer service
It’s important to know that your warranty does not cover damage or defects caused by abuse or improper use of your device, including use in environments where the relevant IP rating limitations are exceeded. Also note that compatible accessories, including batteries, chargers, hands-free devices and micro USB cables, are not waterproof and dust-resistant on their own.
If you send a waterproof or dust-resistant device to a Sony Service Centre for repair, our repair teams will test it to ensure your device still meets the requirements of its IP rating.
